Man Tweets That There Should Be An NHS For Pets But Not Everyone's Convinced

A guy said there should be an NHS for pets which would mean people would 'pay a little extra tax each month' to have free vet care

In unfortunate circumstances, most animal owners will thank vets from the bottom of their heart (and wallets) at one point or another.

It goes without saying that their care for our furry-legged family members is absolutely top notch, but bloody hell it can be expensive.

But this guy thinks he has a solution - a PHS. Think NHS but for your pets. Bear with us.

Mark Walker, 23, from Dundee, Scotland, took to Twitter to pitch the idea.

But it seems people aren't exactly in agreement with Mark because there's been absolute mayhem in the comments section. Can a guy not have an opinion in this day and age?

One person responded to the tweet, saying: "Having a pet is a choice, injury and unemployment (for the most part) aren't choices. When someone gets a pet they do so knowing expensive vet bills are a possibility".

Another added: "Pets are cute and all but having a pets a choice n you factor in all the costs of a pet when u choose to get one".

A third commented: "I've got no pets so I pay for yours though tax?"

It looks like the tweet has caused quite the debate because on the other end of the spectrum people have slammed certain taxes implemented by the government such as unemployment benefits and money that goes to people who have children.

One person said: "You do realise your tax also goes to people who refuse to get jobs either... but yes innocent animals are the problem."

Someone else added to the argument: "I don't have kids and yet I pay for other people's kids through my tax."

It's all getting a little heated.

Mark did add some context to his tweet; explaining that his beloved pooch, Kizzy, was recently admitted to the vets.

He said: "My dog has been getting treatment for arthritis for the last 3 weeks and we were told at the time that there was no point in getting an x-ray as it cost £300 and would just show arthritis.

"After three weeks and pretty much no improvement my mum decided £300 was worth the risk and we got her checked and turns out her hips out of place and she had no arthritis in her body at all.

"My dog would have spent the rest of her life getting treatment for arthritis when she didn't even have it if she was from a poorer family and I didn't think that's right."

Mark told LADbible: "Firstly, my family are well capable of paying for any of my pets' treatment, my tweet was purely aimed at low income families who may not have a few hundred pounds spare at any given moment that their pet may get ill or injured.

"Secondly, my tweet wasn't meant to be a dig at vets, I think they do an amazing job under difficult circumstances.

"And finally, to the people that say 'get pet insurance', pet insurance most of the time is not adequate and you usually have to pay an excess fee. I assume all the people that say 'get pet insurance' have private healthcare and do not benefit from the NHS?

"I think as a country we have a duty to not only look after our people, but also the animals in our care."

Debate away, people.

And for anyone who is struggling to cover vets fees, PDSA is a charity that helps pets and their owners if they are struggling.
