Did you see that baffling and slightly unnerving video of what appeared to be a giant wolf-like creature attacking someone's dog in the woods in North America?

The footage was filmed near a fishing lodge in northern Saskatchewan, where bears are apparently common. In the clip you can see the dog barking loudly at the animal, but towards the end of the video a yelp can be heard as it fights back.

However, the strange creature isn't a grizzly - it's actually probably just a type of black wolf called a timber wolf.

In North America, black wolves are believed to have acquired their colour from wolf-dog hybridisation, which occurred thousands of years ago.

According to Newsflare, the person who filmed the video wrote online: "I work as a fishing guide in northern Saskatchewan and I shot this video on one of our trails around the lodge.

"We get a lot of bears that come around the lodge but this year we had a black wolf that started to come around for a few days.

"We spotted the wolf through the window of the kitchen in the lodge and I made my way outside with the camera. The lodge manager Dan went for the shotgun.

"When I started to take pictures the wolf left, then returned a few minutes later and that's when Trigger took after the wolf.

"The wolf waited for Trigger to turn away from him and that's when he grabbed the dog in the back end and threw her up in the air right in front of me.

"Dan shot the shotgun into the air and that broke the fight up. The wolf turned and left, we followed the wolf into the bush and shot again to scare him off.

"The wolf came back two more times that day looking for the dog we think. Trigger had a few good wounds and cuts but she is fine now."

Recently, photos of a similarly confusing wolf-bear beast were also doing the rounds online - with people unsure whether to swoon or run away.

The animal was found in Chelyabinsk, in south-central Russia's Chelyabinsk Oblast region, and was taken into an animal shelter. At first glance, it looks like a bear cub, but when it stands on all fours it has the appearance of a dog or wolf.

Well, it has since been discovered that the animal is actually a dog, bred to look like a bear.

The poor animal, which vets believe is around four years old, was living on the streets after its owners kicked him out for being too 'aggressive', according to the Sun.

Experts have since hit out at the 'cruel breeding' of such animals. Polina Kefer, who runs the sanctuary, believes the dog may be a cross between a Chow Chow and a wild, street dog.

She said: "We are looking for some really experienced carers for him, but have not found them yet.

"This dog is a 'badly-made' Chow Chow, by those pet markets where irresponsible breeders sell pets pretending that they are a pure breed.

"People buy such puppies and once they grow into something like this dog, they just throw them out like a broken toy."

She told the Serbian Times that the dog has a distinctive blue tongue, which is a characteristic of the Chow Chow, and thinks it's been bred with a 'long-nosed' dog.

"Sadly the dog is so stressed it fights and bites back," she said. "We think it might take months to socialise him."
