Customers notices very rude message on receipt after asking for ice in wine

The message has divided opinion online

A note left on a restaurant receipt by an employee has sparked controversy online.

Anyone who has worked in the hospitality industry is familiar with the silent judgements that you start to form about guests based on their order. It might not always be the most professional thing, but it still happens.

However, it seems one employee at a pub in Brunswick in Melbourne let their frustration boil over onto an order receipt. The worker appeared to add an additional comment onto the order, and on one item in particular.

The receipt.

The note was left after a guest at The Cornish Arms asked for ice in their wine while eating at the pub. But it seems whoever had served them was not impressed with this request.

When they put the order through, they added a comment of their own on request for the ice in the wine, saying: "Terre Forte Pinot Grigio - ice in it f**king bogans."

For those unfamiliar with Australian slang, a 'bogan' is like calling someone a hillbilly or a yokel. It's not a complimentary thing to say.

Needless to say the comment has sparked controversy online, with people divided on whether it was inappropriate or humorous after a picture of the receipt was posted to Reddit.

One person wrote: "It's actually meant to be drunk around 10-13 degrees, not the sweltering 25-35+ degrees we get.

"The temperature of the wine affects flavours in a similar way to cheese.

"At the end of the day, doesn't matter what's 'expected' or 'appropriate'. The customer has paid for it and can drink it however they like."

One does NOT have ice in wine, apparently.

Another, who was unimpressed by the note, wrote: "If you can't do your job without showing basic human respect, you need to find an industry that limits your contact with the public."

Meanwhile, one person saw the funny side, but was unimpressed by the fact that the person had gotten caught, commenting: "This is absolutely hilarious but also very amateur to leave the notes on the receipt for the customer."

While another simply labelled the server as a 'legend'.

The Cornish Arms confirmed it received a complaint from the customer on 25 July, three days after the incident.

The restaurant told 7News: “Staff were spoken to and reminded of their workplace responsibilities and the junior staff member then came forward to management and was very apologetic, not realising it would print on the customer’s receipt.

“She has been spoken to and placed on a three-month probation.

“Her comment in no way reflects the values of The Cornish Arms and we will continue to educate and train staff to ensure the business evolves.

“The customer has since been spoken with and will be returning for a meal on us soon.”

LADbible has reached out to The Cornish Arms for further comment.
