Scouser Gives Away £200 Million To Charity And Makes History

Calm down calm down.

The average person in the UK gives £120 a year to charity - approximately a tenner a month. And if that doesn't sound like much, it all adds up to billions.

But that wasn't enough for successful Liverpudlian businessman Steve Morgan. He set up The Morgan Foundation in 2001 to help disadvantaged families.

He gave the foundation 42 million shares in his company Redrow PLC, which is around 11 per cent of the shareholding. Sounds pretty small, right? Well each share is worth 493p, which make the shares worth a staggering £207 million.

It's thought to be the most money anyone has ever given away in the UK - ever.

Steve is a rich man anyway - the 64-year old has a personal fortune of £880 million. He's was even awarded a CBE for his services to the construction industry last year.

When he's not on the construction site or giving his money away to those in need, the charitable man is a keen footie fan and used to own the Wolverhampton Wanderers. But they're only his second club - he's a big Liverpool FC fan but he failed to secure the club in 2007 when he bid £61 million.

The Morgan Foundation is pretty chuffed with the donation - it supports over 450 charities across North Wales, Merseyside, West Cheshire and North Shropshire. In the last 17 years, over £35 million has been donated (again by Steve) to small organisations with the aim of improving the quality of life in the region.

The administrator at The Morgan Foundation, Jane Harris, said: "Steve Morgan's incredible generosity will mean a huge and profound step-change for The Morgan Foundation.

"Our ethos is based on making a difference and Steve's gift of over £200 million means we will be able to help thousands of more people in need.

"We can also ramp-up the donation of smiley buses which have made such a positive impact to the disabled and socially isolated in our region.

"I'm also delighted to say we are actively planning some very exciting, and significant, capital projects and we'll be announcing more details soon."

Zuckerberg, the charity king

Over at Facebook HQ, Mark Zuckerberg has gone one better. He and his wife Priscilla Chan are donating 90 percent of their Facebook income to charity. Just to put that in perspective, right now that's about £45 billion. It's the biggest donation ever! And they're going to put it into the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, their own foundation that gives money to businesses intent on improving life through science and technology. How cool is that? Your donation is still pretty awesome though, Steve.
