During lockdown, plenty of people have started projects to keep themselves busy. One of those people is Chris Acock, from Portland, Dorset, who picked up an old dodgem off eBay for just £30 ($39) and has now transformed it into a fully-functioning mobility scooter.

The 53-year-old stripped down the motor, installing some new lights and even putting a flag on the rear pole to really give it that wow factor.

In total, the engineer spent around £400 ($524) on fixing up the old banger and recently took it out for a spin with his partner Zarra Lea, reaching a top speed of around 8mph.

Chris said he reckons the funky scooter can cover a distance of around 20 miles and people absolutely love it.

He said: "I'm building stuff all the time and it wasn't that difficult to do. We go to the pub and shops and it seems to make people smile."

Zarra, who works at an electronics company, added: "When Chris told me his plan, I thought it was absolutely marvellous.

"He's modified tractors and lawnmowers before.

"When people first see it, they're in shock because they can't quite believe it. But they then roll down their window for a picture and say, 'That's awesome'."

Chris isn't the only petrol head who's been busy beneath the bonnet.

Paul Nicholls, from Great Yarmouth, fulfilled his dream and turned a beat up motor into the iconic crime-fighting car from Knight Rider.

Speaking to LADbible, the 40-year-old said he picked up the old Pontiac Trans Am in May 2019 for £15,000 ($20,000) and spent £17,000 ($22,000), and the next year-and-a-half, working on it until he had his very own K.I.T.T.

And it even talks just like the real thing.

For those of you who aren't huge Knight Rider nuts, the series follows Michael Long (David Hasselhoff) who, after being shot in the face, undergoes a whole heap of plastic surgery and is 'reborn' as Michael Knight.

Together with his trusty partner K.I.T.T., the pair fight crime and right wrongs, often saving a damsel in distress.

Paul has been a massive fan of the series ever since he was a little lad.

He said: "I was watching Knight Rider from the age of about eight, and as a kid I was obsessed with all the gadgets K.I.T.T. had and how it looked and sounded.

"So when I realised around three years ago that I could actually build one for use on public roads, I started seriously thinking about doing it - and it's a dream come true."
