Woman Horrified After Seeing 'Disgusting' Sign Outside Gym

"I wonder do they know that people can be 'healthy and fit' at any weight?”

Motivational words are used by people and businesses all over the world. Companies will dish them out to keep their workers happy but nowhere are inspiring words or phrases used more than the fitness industry.

It's hard not to imagine why: people need that extra boost to get them over the line.

But an Aussie woman has been shocked and horrified by one gym's attempt at getting people in through the doors.

Facebook

"Are you fat and ugly? Just be ugly," read a sign outside Kawana Anytime Fitness on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, according to the Courier Mail.

Now, at the core of the message, the gym says people could lose weight and then there would be one less worry in their life, but clearly the delivery of the motivational phrase was way off.

Debbie Peut discovered the sign and couldn't believe her eyes.

"I am horrified beyond explanation," Ms Peut told the Courier Mail.

"How sad that the word fat continues to be used as an insult and a way to define people. Why is humiliating people funny?"

"I can tell you that as a person who is not thin or classically beautiful that this gym is the last place I would set foot in, if in fact I chose to go to a gym to exercise," she said.

"I wonder do they know that people can be 'healthy and fit' at any weight?"

She says eating disorders are plaguing people of all ages, shapes and sizes and stigmatising overweight people this way would only act as a trigger and not as something helpful.

There are plenty of motivators to hit the gym and sometimes they come from the most unexpected places.

Niamah Haddow, from Abergavenny, Wales, took a trip to Florida to celebrate her 21st birthday - however a battle to fit a seat-belt on the plane and having to sit in the larger seats on rides brought her weight struggles home.

Niamah says this experience combined with her mum's concern for her help kick started her determination to transform her size and wellbeing.

"I was in a lot of denial due to my weight. My feet were swollen, I was paranoid and my relationship with my partner struggled so much because I was so paranoid about how I looked.

"When I came back from holiday my mum was visiting from Australia. She hadn't seen me in over a year and when she saw me she was scared for my health. At the end of August 2015 I started my journey."

Through a fresh, well-planned diet and running five kilometres a day - having previously never been to a gym before - she has now dropped an amazing 57 kilograms.
