Baileys Has Released A New Flavour – And It's 100% Vegan

We've officially reached peak 2018

We've officially reached peak 2018. That's right, while last year was all about kimchi, overnight oats and turmeric lattes, this year it's all about dairy-free, vegan-friendly Baileys made with almond milk.

The original recipe of Baileys mixes aged Irish whiskey with fresh Irish dairy cream, cocoa and vanilla to create a rich, creamy alcoholic bev that's beloved by the masses. But obviously normally Baileys isn't so much of a hit with those that don't, won't or can't eat dairy - until now, thanks to the introduction of Bailey's Almande.

Jazzy name, right? By the sounds of it, it's a nod to the Old French word for 'almond', because that's classy AF.

The website reads: "Our alcoholic almond drink blends sweet almond oil and almond essence (from crushed almonds), cane sugar and purified water with a touch of real vanilla.

"Baileys Almande is dairy-free and vegan friendly, but very much not free from naughty, delicious indulgence. Best enjoyed over ice."

It's gluten free, too, just in case you were wondering, and each serving has just 67 calories - almost half that of a measure of normal Baileys, which has 130 calories per serving.

The drink has actually been around for a little while, but it's only now that it can be found on the shelves of the UK's big supermarkets, with Asda confirming that it will soon be a proud stockist.

The bottle will be dropping in Asda stores from 1 March - just in time for Mother's Day, obviously - and will cost you £16.

If you prefer an online browse when it comes to food shopping, Ocado has also just started selling it, too. Normally it'd set you back £20, but if you're quick you can nab it for the reduced price of £16. Winner.

According to The Spirits Business, Baileys Almande was initially released on a trial basis in north America - but at that time it wasn't vegan, as the original drink contained beeswax.

But following increasing interest from the ever-expanding vegan community, Baileys bosses decided to make it a fully-fledged animal-friendly liqueur.

"We are excited to welcome spring with Baileys Almande, which offers the same quality and delicious flavour that people love about Baileys, but now in a dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan option that we know many are thrilled to enjoy," said Alex Tomlin, SVP of Scotch Whisky & Reserve Brands at Diageo North America.

He added: "Baileys Almande is delicious, light and easily mixed with refreshing Vita Coco coconut water, which makes it the perfect warm weather treat to enjoy responsibly."

Almond milk Baileys and coconut water? Like we said: peak 2018.
