We don't quite know what it is about the chocolate digestive that makes it so good.

Maybe it's the combination of savoury and sweet in one easily edible biscuit or maybe that it's perfect to have with a cuppa - whatever your reasons are for downing half a packet in one sitting, at least most of us can agree that they're bloody beautiful.

Because it's National Biscuit Day, we thought we'd gauge public opinion and see what you thought was the best biccy in town and the result was a landslide.

With more than 11,000 votes, 52 percent of you reckon the chocolate digestive is the best and we salute you. In second place was a Bourbon on 22 percent and a HobNob very close behind on 21 percent.

Unsurprisingly, the plain digestive only received five percent of the votes, which isn't too hard to understand when it's stacked up against the choccy one.

Some people in the comments section felt robbed that Chocolate HobNobs, Jaffa Cakes and Custard Creams weren't included in the list.

But when you have around 6,000 people voting for digestives, let's be honest, your Custard Creams would've been creamed in the competition.

This certainly isn't the first time Choccy Digestives have taken the crown for the best biccy in the UK.

Way back in 2009, a survey was conducted and the savoury yet sweet food came out on top for the best biscuit to dunking in a tea.

A spokesperson for the internet market research website www.onepoll.com, which carried out the survey, said: "Dunking a biscuit into a hot cup of tea is such a time-honoured tradition and the chocolate digestive wins hands down.

"The combination of the melted chocolate coating and soggy underside makes the ultimate tea companion.

"Dunking can prove tricky at times though - it's vital to catch the biscuit before it gets too wet and drops into the tea. Also be sure you're in the right company before you plunge your favourite tea-time treat into your cup as for some it's seen as an unsavoury habit."

Not only are digestives the best in terms of taste, but structurally they're your best bet.

Physicist Dr Len Fisher, a honorary research fellow at Bristol University actually spent time working out how durable different biscuits are after being dunked in tea. The digestives managed to hold their strength for a whole eight seconds, thanks to its chocolate coating, compared to three to four seconds for HobNobs and Ginger Nuts.
