If you doubt the legitimacy of the saying 'one man's trash is another man's treasure', you might want to read on.

Matt Shoukry, from St Louis, Missouri, probably thought nothing of it when he posted his VHS player on eBay - if anything he probably considered chucking the pile of plastic in the bin.

It sold and, unbeknown to Matt, the buyer was an 86-year-old pensioner based in Phoenix who had never actually used eBay before.

Matt boxed up the vintage device and off it went, never to catch a speck of dust again. Understandably, that's the last Matt thought about it until, on February 10, he received a letter inside a handwritten envelope addressed to him.

The heartwarming note from Don was typed up and told Matt how grateful he was that he sold the video player to him.

Something that offered no light to Matt's life any longer ended up bringing joy to Don's as he wrote in the letter about the fond memories he was able to watch back of celebrations and big occasions.

It stated: "I found my old VHS tapes recently and wanted to see what is on them and realised I had no player. So I went to eBay for the first time and discovered your offer.

"I bought your VHS and you shipped it within a few days. The VHS looks new and unused. Amazing. I had some issues getting it going which were mine and not the player.

"I am 86 and perhaps not up to my game but I do get there eventually. And I did, and discovered the VHS works perfectly. Thank you so much for your care, your efforts, and your promptness."

The letter was in a handwritten envelope.

Then came the real tear-jerker: "I watched tapes of my retirement party from 25 years ago which I had never seen before. Jeez, were we young. Then a tape of my wedding with all the family and friends, many of which are no longer around.

"Then skiing trips, kids growing up, travels, and most importantly the gentle maturing of my family. Each one more fun than the last. All thanks to your generous selling of the VHS player.

"I thought you would appreciate how much someone has enjoyed your offer."

I'm not crying, you're crying.

Matt Shoukry thought nothing about selling the VHS player.

Shoukry told Fox2 that he sat down with his girlfriend to read the letter and they 'were both on the verge of tears reading it'.

It doesn't end there either because being the absolute LAD he is, Matt said: "I'm going to have it framed and keep it next to my desk in my house because it means a lot to me.

"I'm also going to offer to digitise his videos for him so he doesn't have to worry about those tapes degrading."

Maybe they'll become forever friends - here's to hoping.
