As no doubt many of us are currently finding out first hand, shedding a few pounds can be quite difficult. But for one woman in the US, the mountain to climb was much greater.

Milla Clark weighed 53.6 stone and was bedridden for three years, relying on her children to wash her. The 51-year-old said every day of her immobile life was 'miserable' and attempting to stand would leave her in agony due to a three stone lymphedema (swelling) on her leg.

The mum-of-five, from Fayetteville, Tennessee, went 13 years without walking on her own and was unable to visit her husband in hospital prior to his death.

Speaking at the time, Milla said: "Every single day of my life is miserable.

"I have been trapped in these four walls for more than two years. During that time, I have not stood one time. All I can do is eat and sleep.

"It is such a humiliating thing. Children their age shouldn't have to take care of their parents."

However, Milla has now managed to turn her life around, becoming the most successful patient to ever appear on TLC's My 600-lb Life; yes, that is a real show - there have been seven seasons and 93 episodes of it.

Her transformation began more than three years ago, when she reached out to weight loss expert Dr Younan Nowzaradan, who put her on a weight loss plan. Through dietary changes, she was able to lose 100lbs, meaning she was eligible for surgery to have her painful lymphedema removed.

Once she was able to stand on her own, Milla underwent weight loss surgery and several subsequent skin removal surgeries.

Eventually, Milla dropped below the 200lb mark and had both knees replaced, meaning she could walk on her own without a cane or a walker for the first time in more than a decade.

Ultimately, after three years of dedication and numerous operations, Milla reached her target weight of 155lbs, having lost an incredible 42 stone.

Her dramatic weight loss means she is now able to partake in activities such as canoeing, which she could only dream of previously, while her newfound self confidence has enabled her to go dating.

Milla was able to walk again after 13 years.

At the end of the show, her children said they were 'proud' of her turnaround, and Dr Younan Nowzaradan even gave her a big hug - and rightly so.

Top work Milla.
