Not all heroes wear capes.

Akbar Badshah had planned his wife Rozmin's birthday meal meticulously - a posh meal in the middle of Manchester. He was in for a shock, however, when he arrived at Brazilian restaurant Fazenda in stylish Spinningfields to find that the staff wouldn't let him in - because of his flip flops.

Akbar and Rozmin had travelled all the way from Bradford to enjoy her special day and the breaking of their fast together on the first day of Ramadan. Stranded outside the restaurant in the offending sandals, all looked lost.

They needed a superhero to save the day - and they got one from the unlikeliest source.

John, a homeless man sitting nearby with his labrador. Akbar approached him with a proposition: "I said, 'John what size are you?' and he said '14'.

"I'm a size nine so it's a good job it wasn't the other way round! He said, 'you won't believe this, but I've got a brand new pair of shoes from an outreach project', and he said I could borrow them, so we swapped shoes."

The day saved, Akbar and Rozmin went in to enjoy her birthday tea.

On leaving the restaurant, they returned the shoes to John. Akbar tried to offer him a £10 note, but John wasn't having any of it.

"He wouldn't take it. I said, 'Please, please I want to give it to you'." Akbar told the Manchester Evening News.

As luck had it, another man was walking by and heard the discussion, before dropping a crisp £50 into John's hand.

"John couldn't believe it. It was unbelievable karma. He kept saying he didn't want anything in return. I gave John a hug and we took some photos together. We just felt touched by what he had done." Akbar explained.

Karma does work after all.
