Hero Crab Jumps Out Of Frying Pan And Turns Off Cooker To Save Mates

Crustacean LAD.

"I get by with a little help from my friends..."

So sang The Beatles on their classic album Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Little did they know that, over in China, a few crabs might have been listening in and paying attention.

One such crustacean LAD (or should we say CRAB) did his mates the ultimate solid by rescuing them from a banquet dinner table and a salt & pepper sauce by leaping acrobatically from the pan and turning off the electric hob before they were cooked.

The day was not going well for the crab gymnast and three of his pincered pals, as they can be spotted in the video scrambling for their lives amid a few knobs of butter in a frying pan.

The crab LAD takes his fate into his own hands, however, springing from the burning, buttery flames out of the pan and onto the electric hob. Our intrepid crustacean then descends the hob - all of this done sideways, of course - before locating the off switch and managing to deploy it with his claws.

The sweet beep of survival can be heard as the video ends, presumably whereupon his crab companions start to cheer in delights at their life-saving, soft-shelled chum.

The whole affair went down in Lianyungang, a city about halfway up China on the eastern coastline in Jiangsu province. It's native cuisine, Jiangsu is highly seasonal and known as one of the great eight culinary traditions of China.

Whoever the master was on duty in this restaurant was, however, might be getting the Chinese equivalent of a P45 sometime in the near future. Leaving a hot pan unattended is one thing, but then filming yourself being outwitted by one of your protein sources is never going to end well.

As for the crabs themselves, we can only assume that it was out of the frying pan into the fryer for these little crustaceans: we're not expecting that the cooks gave them a reprieve after such a daring escape.
