104-Year-Old Professor To Fly From Australia To Switzerland To End His Own Life

Voluntary euthanasia is not legal in the British-born professor’s home of Western Australia so he is going to travel to Europe

One of the world's oldest scientists is preparing to fly across the world to end his life because he 'regrets living for so long'.

At 104 years old, British-born David Goodall has lived through two world wars, 20 football World Cups and has seen the first man on the moon - so he's certainly lived an action-packed life.

But the botanist and ecologist, who has lived in Australia since 1948, says he wants to die.

However, he is having to fly thousands of miles across the world to Switzerland to end his own life because voluntary euthanasia is not legal in Western Australia.

He told ABC: "I greatly regret having reached that age. I'm not happy, I want to die. It's not sad, particularly. What is said is if one is prevented. If one chooses to kill oneself, then that should be fair enough. I don't think anyone else should interfere."

Thousands of pounds/dollars have been raised through a gofundme page so the pensioner can fly business class to end his life later this month at the Life Circle in Basel.

Controversial euthanasia campaigner Philip Nitschke said his organisation, Exit International, was assisting Professor Goodall to travel business class to the clinic.

Dr Nitschke, who set up the crowdfunding page, said another reason they want to upgrade Professor Goodall is to make sure the stress of the flight does not kill his friend.

West Australia is currently considering making voluntary euthanasia legal - but only for those who are terminally ill. So, it would not help someone like Professor Goodall.

Professor Goodall was born in London in 1914 before moving to Australia years later to take up a lecturing position at the University of Melbourne.

It's not the first time that he has hit the headlines. In 2016, there was anger when Edith Cowan University took away his office because they felt he was a safety risk.

But he refused to let age hold him back and eventually the university back-tracked and gave him another office.

So, after more than a century on this planet, Professor Goodall has decided enough is enough and it's time to say goodbye.

But the debate rages on as to whether people like Professor Goodall should be able to have the final say in how they die.
