It's obvious when you think about it

If you were out this weekend you may have noticed that students are back for freshers, leaving the city centres of Britain heady with youthful decadence and chunder.

Looking through the embittered, labour-worn glasses of nine to five employment, it's easy to see them as a nuisance but recent research shows that if they're studying certain subjects they could be quids-in following graduation. In fact, they could one day end up as billionaires.

A study by recruitment agency Aaron Wallis found that 75 of the world's 100 richest people have earned a degree, demonstrating the importance of academic qualifications - despite figures such as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg being notable drop-outs.

Of the 75 with a higher education qualification, 22 - including Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Google's Larry Page - had studied engineering, 16 graduated in business and 11 read finance and economics.

The study also looked at their job history to see if there was any correlation between their first careers and how much dosh people go on to accumulate - finding that the most popular starting job for the well off was as a salesperson.

As for the competition to be the richest person in the world, last month it was reported that Jeff Bezos, the owner of online retail giant Amazon.com, had overtaken Bill Gates at the top of the global rich list.

Though it was only momentary, with Gates reclaiming his top spot shortly after, the news came after the website's shares jumped 1.8 percent to $1,071.31 (£819.99) pushing Bezos' personal wealth to over $91 billion (£69.6bn).

Bezos is currently hundreds of billions away from reaching a worth of one trillion, but reports suggest that he could be the world's first trillionaire by 2042.

A recent Oxfam report on wealth and inequality found that people like Bezos could find themselves swimming in a ridiculous amount of money within the next 25 years.

It was found in Oxfam's report that in the last ten years or so, the richest 793 people in the world maintained a collective net worth of $5 trillion, meaning there was an annual growth of 11% from 2009 when it totaled $2.4 trillion.

"If these returns continue, it is quite possible that we could see the world's first trillionaire within 25 years," the report stated.

In case you're wondering, Bezos graduated from Princeton University with Bachelor of Science degrees in electrical engineering and computer science. So yeh, engineering.
