LADs Immortalise Alf Stewart's Iconic Status On The Bonnet Of Their Car

They're raising money for cancer research as they travel more than 3,600kms across Australia.

As far as Aussie icons go, we've got a couple up our sleeve. You've got Bert Newton, Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham, Olivia Newton John, Kylie Minogue...the list goes on.

But few have reached the iconic meme status that Ray Meagher's character from Home and Away has done.

Alf Stewart is everyone's favourite TV dad/grandad for calling people 'flamin galahs' and saying 'Stone the flamin' crows!' And it's this legendary status that has seen him immortalised onto two LAD's car bonnet.

Two Aussie blokes have had Ray's awesome character spray painted onto their 1993 XG Falcon ute as they gear up for a car trip across the Land Down Under to raise money for cancer research.

Don and Ben Allen are taking part in this year's Shitbox Rally, which is 'a challenge to achieve the unthinkable'.

Don has told LADbible: "Travelling across Australia via some of its most formidable roads and remote communities, all in a car worth under $1000. The rally has been running for 10 years with always varying routes throughout Australia.

"This Spring, Ben and I and 250 other cars are driving 3,600kms, over seven days, from Melbourne to Townsville via western QLDs iconic Birdsville. The point of the rally is to raise funds for cancer research via the Cancer Council."

Over the course of the decade that the rally has been running, more than $20 million has been raised by thousands of teams.

While the call for adventure is hard to ignore, the LADs were also motivated by their dad being diagnosed with prostate cancer twice.

"Without vital research into a cure and managing this shithouse disease he wouldn't be here, so that's the motivator for me," Don said.

Now, while it's not necessary to question why Don and Ben chose to have Alf Stewart on the front of their car (because everyone would love to have the same done to their vehicle), we just had to ask.

"Our Team name for the rally is 'Flaming Mongrels'," Don told us. "This came about from the epic, single flame door we have on our mighty Falcon and the fact that, in the real world, we would probably be considered Mongrels.

"The charity rally car look is always a bit of a wild one so we had to come up with something that catches the eye. Alf Stewart loves a good old 'Famin' Mongrels!' so he had to be on the bonnet!"

In addition to the Alf Stewart art, the LADs have also chucked on a new distributor, bull horns, Knight Rider red LED lights, Collingwood logo light projector on the driver side, a siren, a KFC box to the roof, a custom security system and a new exhaust.

"We're prepped for the drive we think. The car surprisingly drives okay. Although each drive a new noise seems to come out of the car. Nothing the volume control on the stereo wont fix," Don tells us.

"It really is fingers crossed we make the distance. We get $500 for fuel for the trip and the rest we have to pay for. I reckon that will get us from Melbourne to the outer suburbs, so we may eventually need to 'Flintstone' the vehicle to Townsville."

They've raised more than $5,500 so far for the Cancer Council but are keen to get to $10,000. If you want to donate, click here.
