An Australian Yoga Teacher Is Running Naked Yoga Classes For Women And They’ve really ‘taken off’ in her home town of Perth

Yoga classes can be pretty embarrassing places at the best of times. Sometimes they are in massively hot rooms, and the stretches can make you fart if you aren't careful.

Now you can turn the awkwardness up another notch - because an Australian yoga instructor is offering classes for women with a unique twist - everyone in the class is stark naked.

Rosie Rees first started doing yoga in the buff by herself in her back yard (which is a pretty dangerous game to play, depending on who your neighbours are) after she picked up the idea from her old housemate, who was a nudist.

Now she's got hundreds of women joining her (hopefully not still in the garden) to practice naked yoga.

She thinks that her different approach to the classic yoga format is great for self-esteem, helps to relieve stress, and even helps to improve the relationships and sex lives of the people who come to her classes.

She would know too - she is also a relationship coach. The naked yoga classes have been running in her home city of Perth for three years now, but she plans to take the show on the road and try to get her venture off the ground in the USA by travelling to New York.

She says: "When I first tried to do yoga practice without clothes - first in my bedroom and then in the backyard - I was shocked at how critical and judgmental about my body I was.

"I didn't like the various scars on my body, rolls of fat on my belly and I noticed all the cellulite, but I also felt liberated and free. As my practice progressed, I felt a lot more present with myself.

"I became really aware of my body and breath, even the tiniest movement, how the air felt on my skin, the beads of sweat."

"I began loving my body as it was, I became more accepting and comfortable, I began seeing any imperfections as unique parts of me."

She says that she approached a well-known yoga school offering to trial the classes, and they were understandably a bit wary about the whole thing, but once she got going she says the classes sold out and were a big hit.

"I told them I wanted to desexualise nudity and wanted to help women overcome their body image issues," she continues.

"They agreed to give it a go, and the first class was a sell-out. I haven't looked back since.

"Naked yoga is not just yoga, it's a spiritual journey.

"It takes courage to come to a naked yoga class, but that courage translates to better relationships at work, with family and most importantly, with oneself.

"When women learn to accept and love their naked bodies, it directly affects their relationship with their partners, so men have become big supporters of mine."

Glad to hear that the classes have really 'taken off'.
