Blokes don't use them as much as might be sensible.

If you're a man, then you might well be aware of this...problem.

It might also be something that you know about, but don't mention too often in public.

We're talking about condoms, and more specifically, how we blokes don't use them as much as might be sensible. We all know that they're the best way to avoid a whole heap of unpleasant outcomes, we know that they are sensible, we know that we should but...we don't always use them.

Well, some boffins in the United States have cracked their heads together and come up with a little theory as to why we don't always want to use condoms and gents, it's going to get even more embarrassing.

The New York Times recently published an article that suggests that only a third of American men use condoms and that a large reasoning for not bothering with them is that they are too big.

That's right. Let's say that they're too big rather than we're too small. That makes us feel better. Debby Herbenick, a sexual health specialist at Indiana University has this to say on the subject, shedding a little light on the original idea behind the sizing of condoms.

"The idea was it had to be long enough to fit most men, and excess length could just be rolled," she says.

Her researched skewers the idea that there is a one-size-fit-all solution to penis length: of the 1661 men that she surveyed, a whopping 83% were inadequately endowed to fill the condom.

Ron Frezieres, vice president for research and evaluation at nonprofit organisation Essential Access Health, remarked that 'condoms tend to slip off', and that 'shorter men had a big roll of latex at the base of the penis'.

The average penis size is 5.57 inches (14.15cm), whereas the industry minimum standard condom is 6.69 inches (17cm) long.

There is one company trying to change this by producing bespoke products to match the needs of blokes. myONE condoms have 60 possible sizes, ranging from 4.9 inches all the way up to 9.4 inches, with differing girths too.

It seems to be working: myONE claims to have had orders for every size within hours of making them available via their website.
