There are some anti-drug campaigns that try to explain the nasty side of narcotics. They'll say that [insert substance] will ruin your life and could cause untold damage to your body and your mind. Well, a young American woman has experienced that dark side to pretty much the fullest extent after a bad experience with methamphetamine.

Kaylee Muthart, 20, from South Carolina was found gouging out her own eyes with her fingers during a meth-induced hallucination. Residents who came across the young woman during her traumatic experience tried to help, but she fought them off.

Police were eventually called and she was subdued and transported to hospital.

Doctors at the Greenville Memorial Hospital worked to extract what was left of her eye-socket and treat the wound to ensure it didn't become infected.

Her mum Katy Tompkins has told PEOPLE: "I can't even explain that feeling when I found out, it was horrifying. Complete terror."

Kaylee had been using meth for about six months before her horrific injury.

The road to recovery is going to be a long one as physicians say the young woman is now completely blind from the incident. To help with that journey, Kaylee's mum has started a fundraising page to get her daughter a service dog.

In a little more than a week, more than $5,000 (£3,583) has been raised, with many people touched by the 20-year-old's story.

Her mum has been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support, writing: "Thank you all who have helped and sent prayers! I want you to know that, with my sincere heart and so does Kaylee! You have no idea how much it means to us!"

While Katy is hoping to reach her $8,000 goal, she also wants this to serve as a message to anyone thinking about doing meth to stay away from it.

"If Kaylee's story can help just one person, something good can come of this tragedy in our family," she writes. "We are truly grateful for all the prayers and help we've received thus far and ask that you give whatever you can and continue to pray for us.

"The sooner we can provide Kaylee with a service dog, the sooner we can help her get back on her feet."

She says that Kaylee is 'herself again' but still has flashbacks of the things she witnessed during her hallucinations, making it difficult for her to forget what happened.
