When we were 19, we were regularly missing lectures because we couldn't say no to a cheap night in Revolution the previous evening. So let's all look in shame at teenager Juan Miguel Echevarria - he's just produced the longest jump in 23 years at the Stockholm Diamond League.

The 19-year-old Cuban, who represented his country at the 2017 World Championships, stunned spectators with a monstrous 8.83m jump - the furthest anyone has jumped since 1995. What an achievement.

It was such a distance that he launched himself into fifth place on the world all-time list - which you would expect after watching it, seeing as he almost jumped out of the sandpit.

The long jump world record is held by Mike Powell who broke Bob Beamon's almost 23-year-old long jump world record at the 1991 World Championships in Athletics. Powell broke the record by 5cm (2 inches), leaping 8.95m.

Anyway, back to the man of the moment, who left with top spot at the Diamond League meet in Stockholm yesterday but a tailwind denied him a place in the record books. Yes, tailwind - that thing we mere mortals only hear about if our flight to Spain is faster than usual.

After racing to the stands to celebrate with supporters, Echevarria's delight was tempered by the ruling that the wind of 2.1 metres per second was just over the legal limit, according to the Straits Times.

He said: "Today I wanted 8.5 metres but I didn't think I could jump so far." Well, he proved himself wrong there, didn't he?

He then added: "I want to jump at this level for a long time but it's early season so I will just take it all step by step. I'm not even thinking about nine meters - I will have to keep working very hard in order to jump that, it is a huge barrier.

As you'd imagine, people were amazed by his performance.

One fan said: "19 year old Juan Miguel Echevarria of Cuba just jumped 8.83 - that's 28' 11 3/4" making him the 6th longest jumper under all conditions, behind ONLY Powell, Pedroso Lewis, Beamon and Emmeyan."

Another added: "'Today, I wanted over 8.50m but I didn't think I could jump so far!' Juan Miguel Echevarría after his marginally windy (+2.1) 8.83m long jump in Stockholm. Yes, that's EIGHT POINT EIGHTY-THREE!#StockholmDL."

And a third commented: "Freaking hell!! Cuban long-jumper Juan Miguel Echevarria just posted a massive effort of 8.83m. Launches himself into fifth place on the word all-time list."

Congratulations to Juan Miguel Echevarria though, that was way, way beyond impressive.
