Lot of people will have thought once or twice about what their final wish would be before they die. Whether it's to see the beach one last time, eat from their favourite restaurant or just be able to see all their family together - there no shortage of things you'd want.

One grandad's wish before he left this Earth was to see his beloved pet one last time.

Hospitals are meant to be a pretty sterile place for obvious reasons, but it seems as though staff at NHS Ninewells Hospital north of Edinburgh thought it couldn't hurt anyone if a dog was allowed to visit its owner.

Peter Robson was surrounded by close family as his border collie Shep came into his wing.

The dog was unsurprisingly thrilled to see the grandad, who removed his oxygen mask to interact with Shep. There wasn't a dry eye in the room as Peter and Shep bonded for the final time before he died yesterday.

Granddaughter Ashley Stevens posted the video and a series of pictures on Facebook, writing: "Absolutely amazed and touched today from NHS Ninewells hospital, our grandads last and final wish was to see his dog one more time.

"Still in shock that the wish was granted and they went above and beyond today and made a dying man very happy. Cheryl White charge nurse of Ward 3 you are an absolute angel and we are all eternally grateful you don't know what this meant to our grandad.

"I'll let these moments do the talking, thank you NHS."

We don't deserve dogs.

One person on social media wrote: "What a wonderful, wonderful gesture, it's such a shame that the doggies behaviour is so strained but due to the circumstances it is entirely understandable. Grandad must have been over the moon."

Animals are only allowed at the hospital under 'exceptional circumstances' which include a 'special request from a terminally ill patient'.

NHS Tayside Chief Executive Lesley McLay has told the Mirror: "Our thoughts are with Mr Robson's family as they deal with their loss at this difficult time.

"The ward 3 team has done a wonderful thing for this family. It is often the little things that mean the most to patients and their families and I'm so pleased that the staff were able to grant this wish.

"The team in ward 3 were the first ever Gold Outstanding Team winners in our STAR Awards last year and, with actions like this, it's not hard to see why."
