Penguins At Edinburgh Zoo Are Loving The Snow

As Storm Emma and the Beast from the East brings plenty of snow to the UK, penguins are losing their s**t...

Most of us have been putting plenty of layers of clothing on and braving the conditions being seen across the UK. The Beast from the East and Storm Emma are wreaking havoc, bringing sub-zero temperatures, bone-chilling wind and mountains of snow. Summer couldn't feel further away right now.

While we try to reminisce of that trip to Benidorm last July to make us feel a bit warmer, there's one group that is absolutely loving this dramatic weather - penguins.

Scotland is copping its fair share of the two weather systems, but obviously this is the perfect setting for penguins at Edinburgh Zoo. While the facility may be closed to the public, staff are still required to feed the animals and have noticed the small birds are buzzing over all the snow inside their enclosure.

The zoo tweeted: "The weather conditions may have been challenging for us humans, but they didn't stop this gentoo penguin from enjoying the #snowday2018!"

People have commented on the posts, with Karen saying: "I just love seeing the wee penguins cutting about in the snow...hope they have fun."

Gentoo penguins are typically found on sub-Antarctic islands, including the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Kerguelen Islands, which obviously have very cold climates. So while we might be hating the weather at the moment, at least there's something out there enjoying it.

There are still red warnings for south east England for at least the next 12 hours, with concerns that the area will be hit with a huge dumping of snow as well as blistering and fierce winds.

The Met Office says: "Some places could also see significant ice build up due to freezing rain from later on Thursday evening, most likely in the south of the area.

"Long interruptions to power supplies and other utilities are very likely to occur, along with damage to trees and other structures due to heavy snow or ice."

Dartmoor, Exmoor and parts of south east Wales could get up to 50 centimetres of snow during this double whammy of storms. You can bet the penguins up in Scotland wouldn't mind a transfer south right about now.

There's a yellow warning for virtually everywhere in Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales for Saturday, but thankfully the awful weather is expected to chill out (pun not intended) a bit and maybe everyone might get a small window to thaw out.
