A generous painter and decorator has offered up his services to give free makeovers for those in need, after being inspired by a family he met last year.

William Leggatt, owner of Paint Pots Swansea, shared a post on Facebook, pledging to give up one weekend a month to help those who needed it.

Whatever the situation - 'house fires, floods, damage, struggling, elderly, single parents moving home' - Leggatt is more than happy to help.

In the week since posting his status, he has received just over 1,000 requests from families looking for the help.

Speaking to LADbible, he said: "To be honest it's an easy decision to be able to offer my help to people who are faced with unforeseeable circumstances and as such are down on their luck.

"I know, from times of hardship myself, what it's like to need help and being too proud to ask.

"It's an honour to be able to put people in a comfortable situation after facing struggles of their own - plus I am young, and I want to do good things and for my business to be part of that movement."

He first thought of the idea when visiting his local paint supplier in search of obsolete stock like dented tins, hoping that because suppliers would no longer want them he could use the paint for his campaign.

Paint company Dulux has since donated tins, with William supplying what's left: resources, other materials and his own time.

Early last year, the 27-year-old was contacted by social services to help the Stevens family, whose mum was 'terminally ill, with an autistic son'.

Leon Stevens, whose wife Angela was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, was extremely grateful to William for helping the family free of charge.

Speaking to Huffington Post, dad-of-one Leon said: "At the time everything was so up in the air, I wouldn't have been able to get around to doing the decorating. I didn't have the time and my head wasn't in the right space to do it.

"When my wife came out of hospital, the house was practically finished. It was nice for her to come home and see the property had had a makeover."

William said: "It was a no brainer that I was going to help these people and be able to give them a home to prepare for their time ahead."

The selfless painter and decorator has also worked on DIY: SOS as part of the Children In Need 'million-pound build' just before Christmas. He said that the build was another inspiration that sparked his interest for helping people.

"I think that if you know somebody who needs help, then help them. If you can, then why not? I didn't do this for recognition - I did this because I can.

"Everybody is in control of their own actions and maybe if everybody joined on board and offered their support to Paint Pots Swansea, we could make more families have a better chance in life."

He added: "We can all do more."

And any advice to future entrepreneurs and business owners who want to follow suit? "If you want to do something. Go for it. Everything is achievable. Take one step at a time and stick to your plans."
