If you're planning on going in heavy on the booze this Bank Holiday weekend then you're going to need something substantial to line your stomach. Luckily, budget supermarket Lidl has just the thing.

The German chain has launched a colossal 1.1kg cut of steak - and it'll only set you back £14.99 per KG.

The Cowboy Deluxe steak is a bone-in ribeye steak with a short frenched bone, and Lidl reckons it's the first supermarket to sell one.

Fifteen quid for a steak may seem a little expensive on first glance, but when you take into account that a similar steak from the butcher's would set you back around £23, you're basically printing your own money if you get stocked up on these bad boys.

The massive joint of beef is dry aged on the bone for 14 days, and further matured to 21 days.

Lidl claims that this gives the meat a fuller flavour, while making it tender and succulent.

The gargantuan steak will hit shelves this Thursday, 29 March, but if you want to get your hands on one you'll need to act fast as stocks are limited and demand is likely to be very high.

Richard Bourns from Lidl UK said: "We are committed to providing our customers with the best quality meat at market leading prices.

"All our beef is British and assured to the high welfare standards of the Red Tractor quality assurance scheme, ensuring our meat is not only of the highest quality, but fully traceable from British farms to fork.

"Our premium Deluxe steaks continue to be extremely popular with customers and we're sure our Deluxe Cowboy Steak will not disappoint."

News of the giant steak comes shortly after Lidl hit headlines for vowing to stop selling 5p bags.

In an effort to tackle the growing problem of plastic waste, the German retail chain announced earlier in the month that it would only be selling 9p bags-for-life from the end of 2018.

"We're proud of our clear, ambitious targets for the reduction of plastic waste. We have looked at plastic packaging in the context of our wider sustainability commitments and strongly believe that our circular approach will deliver a long-term solution," said Christian Härtnagel, chief executive of Lidl in the UK.

"We want to create a major shift in the way that packaging and plastics are used, to ensure that these resources are recovered and retained, eradicating plastic waste and moving us towards a truly circular system in the long term."

"We know our business and the wider industry needs to take big steps to achieve this; that's why we have set clear and ambitious targets, not only to ensure that our packaging is completely recyclable, but that we are driving demand for this material by driving recycled content."
