Britain loves its pies. Like, absolutely, well-and-truly cherishes pies. The love is so devout, in fact, that there's national uproar when someone even dares think about dousing one in sub-standard gravy.

Yup, pies are about as British as a cup of tea or opening a conversation with a polite quip about the weather - but what's the top dog in a nation where there's not only such passion, but also variety?

Takeaway site hungryhouse.co.uk undertook some research last year to find out what Britain considered its favourite pie, also breaking the results down into different locations to see if it fed into the whole north vs. south debate (spoiler: it did).

The favourite pie overall was steak and ale pie with 22 percent of the nation voting it their go-to, followed by steak and potato pie with 17 percent of votes. In third was cottage pie with 15 percent.

The UK's Top 10 Pies

1) Steak and ale pie (22%)
2) Steak and potato pie (17%)
3) Cottage pie (15%)
4) Chicken & mushroom pie (13%)
5) Apple pie (10%)
6) Pork Pie (9%)
7) Banoffee pie (7%)
8) Pie barm (4%)
9) Cornish pasty (2%)
10) Cheese & onion pie (1%)

Somewhat shockingly, the pork pie was ranked sixth favourite behind apple pie, while the pie barm only got four percent of the country's vote (or, no doubt, just Wigan's) support.

Then, of course, there's the Cornish pasty on there in ninth place, which could seem controversial to the many who would never class a pasty is a pie - because, you know, it's a pasty.

That wasn't the only surprise. In fact, it wasn't even a surprise when you compare it to what Londoners chose as their favourite pie: banoffee.

The South's Top 5 Pies

1) Banoffee (43%)
2) Apple Pie (22%)
3) Steak and ale pie (15%)
4) Cottage pie (11%)
5) Chicken and mushroom pie (9%)

Banoffee was also followed up by apple pie, which means that in another shocker, steak and ale didn't appear until third place.

The north, meanwhile, kept things much more traditional - with steak and potato bagging the top spot, followed up by the pork pie and pie barm in the runner-up places.

The North's Top 5 Pies

1) Steak and potato pie (47%)
2) Pork pie (33%)
3) Pie barm (10%)
4) Cottage Pie (7%)
5) Cornish Pasty (3%)

What do you reckon?
