A student was left mortified after a photo of him went viral, because he was stood beside a fella who spent £1,000 on a massive bottle of vodka.

Mufaro Ndovorwi, 21, woke up with more than a hangover after a Tuesday night out, becoming the unexpected star of a photo that has been slated online.

The photo, which was taken at The Astoria in Portsmouth, shows a 'big spender' holding a six-litre bottle of Belvedere vodka, posing with what appears to be his pals.

Mufaro Ndovorwi says he had only just met the man in the white top.

However, Mufaro says he doesn't know the man and that he and his friend were only chatting to him as he offered them free drinks. Well, I can't say I blame him, there.

Mufaro, from Hayling, said: "The guy in the white top came up to me, I'd never met him before.

"He just popped out of nowhere and said 'would you guys be interested in coming up to the booth and getting some free drinks?' and we thought 'why not?'.

"We were drinking with him for about 10 minutes before having the photo taken. I only really noticed the big bottle when he picked it up for that picture.

"There were two pictures taken - one I posed for, but no-one grabbed the vodka bottle.

"I was caught off guard in the second picture when I saw him pick up the bottle. I was like 'oh wow'. It's not something you see every day, especially on a Tuesday night.

"A few of my friends ducked out of that photo, I was just wondering what was going on.

"[The guy in the white top] said he'd bought the massive bottle of vodka."

The photo was shared on The Astoria Facebook page with the caption: "How much for that big bottle behind the bar? ... £1,000 ... "yeah, I'll take it". #BigSpenders #£1kOnAschoolNight!"

It quickly garnered hundreds of comments, with many slamming the men for buying the pricey bottle of booze.

One wrote: "It's Astoria not Vegas, lads."

While another posted: "A grand for 6 litres. #getrobbed."

A third added: "At least these chaps will see these comments and know they've made great life choices. Also, I hope security wouldn't let them leave the premises with the bottle and made them take the rest in plastic cups."

Others cut out Mufaro's face and added captions, such as: 'just realised what he's done' and 'when the loan repayments kick in', prompting him to defend himself, saying that he was 'stood next to a clown'.

Mufaro added: "I first realised the picture had been put up on the nightclub page when my friend tagged me in the picture.

"It's embarrassing that people thought I'd been involved in buying the bottle. I did end up laughing though, it is what it is. It's already out there and is out of my control."

The guy holding the bottle of vodka declined to comment and denied buying it, claiming it was purchased by a friend.

Mufaro has said the whole thing has been a 'lesson learnt'.

Mufaro says his 15 minutes of viral fame, have taught him a 'lesson', adding: "I was just posing for a picture, I didn't realise what was going on.

"It was good to set the record straight, I had to because a lot of people were seeing it - I was all over people's Snapchats.

"It was one of those moments I thought 'I'm never getting myself in a picture at Astoria or any club because you never know where that could go'.

"It was more of a lesson learnt than anything else."
