Man Sick Of Speeding Motorists Makes Fake Speed Camera

A man has knocked together a fake speed camera to place outside his home after getting sick of seeing motorists fly past at 60mph.

Jim Dyke, 32, lives in the village of Clows Top, Worcestershire, where the road outside his property has a 30mph limit. But, he says, some drivers take no notice to this and are regularly spotted whizzing past at up to 60mph.

Deciding enough was enough, he came up with the idea of making his own fake speed camera and propping it up outside his home to con drivers left, right and centre.

He spent £25 to make his DIY 'speed camera' using a piece of drain pipe and a mirrored beer mat. It really does look the part. This fella needs a job on Blue Peter.

He said: "The camera is in my front garden just behind the fence, so it looks as much like the real thing as possible.

"I'd been thinking about building my own fake camera for about three weeks after watching cars speed down our road at double the 30mph speed limit.

"It's a residential road and we've only lived here for three months, we had no idea how busy the road was until we moved in.

"We only ever viewed the property in the evening when it's a lot quieter. I painted the wooden box yellow so it looks very convincing and not like a bird box.

"Since the first day we put it up last Saturday we've noticed a huge difference. One woman even got out of her car and asked if it was real as if it was, she'd lose her driving licence.

"We of course told her it wasn't but we do hope it makes other motorists think about their speed.

"There has even been a fatality on our road earlier this year which shows how necessary it is that the speed on our road is addressed."

Jim says he and his wife, Charlotte, have been praised by other local residents for the idea and says they have received no negative comments so far. He also hopes that his idea might inspire other fed-up homeowners to give it a bash themselves.

"Our local community is thrilled with the results," Jim said. "We're so pleased it hasn't been ripped down by anyone yet.

"The only criticism we've had is that once people know it's not real that they won't slow down. But we have all sorts of people passing through our village that it's unlikely they'll all be locals.

"The results have been incredible so far and if it makes motorists slow down it's doing its job. It was the best £25 I've ever spent."
