A determined out-of-work labourer has landed a job after standing by the side of the road with a homemade sign asking for employment.

Nathan Campbell, 22, was tired of being on the dole and getting knocked back from job applications when he decided to venture off piste.

His plea paid off when he was spotted by builder John Anderson on the A77 near Symington, Ayrshire, who pulled off the road and offered Nathan a job there and then.

Nathan told the Sun: "I was only there 20 minutes and I heard this peep.

"It was a guy in a van from McTaggart Civils and he asked me what experience I had. I told him I'd done a bit of labouring and he said he admired what I had done and he would give me a job.

"That was the Monday morning - by the Friday he called me and said I could have a start the next week."

Nathan, who has previously worked in catering at festivals and dreams of becoming an actor, revealed that it had all become too much after weeks of declined job applications.

"I'd applied for about 14 or 15 jobs but either got no response at all or a negative response.

"Sitting in the house and going through the same stuff every day drove me up the walls and I thought I had to do something. Just making that one small move has made a massive difference.

"I would definitely say to people to put themselves out there."

Contract manager John told the newspaper he was impressed by Nathan's obvious desire to work and decided to give him a chance.

He said: "I saw Nathan on my way to site and thought it showed a lot of ingenuity.

"He had some relevant skills and experience but most of all I was impressed by his willingness to work, so we gave him a chance."

Nathan is planning to use some of his new earnings to treat his girlfriend Alix Cowan, 20.

"I have just finished my first week and it feels great knowing I'm earning money.

"I'm looking forward to taking Alix out for a meal and doing the things we should be able to do together."

Alix also praised her boyfriend's determination.

She said: "He's very spontaneous. If he gets something in his head, he'll just go with it. He has always been like this - he doesn't care what other people think."
