Look, we all have to do things we don't really want to do, especially when it involves the grandparents, so we've no idea how Prince William managed to duck out of meeting Donald Trump with the Queen.

Her Maj met with the president on her own, apparently because Prince Charles and Prince William didn't want to meet him.

A source told the Sunday Times that both royals made it clear they didn't want to be involved with Trump's visit to Windsor Castle.

Prince Philip was also apparently not very keen, but seeing as he retired from public engagements last year anyway, he had a valid excuse.

The royal source said: "This business of Prince Charles and William not being there for the Trump visit was a snub.

"They simply refused to attend. It is very very unusual for the Queen to be there on her own. Usually she is accompanied by somebody.

"Prince Charles has been substituting for Prince Philip recently."

The meeting was controversial and he's come under fire for breaking the very precise royal protocol - Trump was late, walked in front of Her Maj, and apparently talked to her about Brexit.

He was accompanied to the meeting by First Lady Melania Trump.

A Whitehall official said: "The Queen will do her duty, but among the wider family, they were not as enthusiastic as they were when Obama came."

When Barack and Michelle visited in 2016, they had a private dinner with William, Kate and Harry at Kensington Palace, as well as lunch with the Queen and Prince Philip at Windsor Castle.

We would honestly love to hear what they were talking about over their scones.

It's worth bearing in mind that this isn't an official state visit - it's an informal trip that's ended with Trump taking some time off at his golf resort in Scotland.

If it had been an official state visit, more of the royal family would have had to be involved, whether they liked it or not.

Charles is the first in line to the throne and William is second, but neither were in line to meet Trump when he visited the castle on Friday evening.

The Queen has met with every president of the US, apart from Lyndon B. Johnson, since 1952.
