If a tree falls in a forest, do you hear it? If you have a pet, but that pet doesn't have an Instagram account, does it actually exist?
It seems these days most people would answer no to that second question, so prolific are the number of accounts for pets. There's Grumpy Cat, Boo, Lil Bub, Marnie, etc etc, all of whom are a bit like the Kardashians of the animal world. Or maybe that's their owners.
Anyway, there's some sad news today regarding one of Instagram's most well-loved animals - Loki, an eight-year-old Sphynx cat who became famous on Instagram for looking even more grumpy than Grumpy Cat, died suddenly during a routine dental appointment.
Loki's New York-based owners, Brent Erickson and Sara Kjelsvig, announced the death of their hairless cat yesterday, via the social media platform that had made him famous.
In an emotional, heartbreaking tribute, Sara wrote on Loki's Instagram account: "Brent and I are absolutely devastated, we unexpectedly lost our little buddy and best friend last night.
"We brought Loki in for a routine dental cleaning and during recovery one of the staff noticed an increase in his breathing. They tried everything but his little heart couldn't take it. Loki didn't make it.
"The vet suspects he had underlying heart disease that didn't show until yesterday. We know a lot of you never met Loki but he made a great impact on all of you.
"Today we will be posting a bunch of our favorite photos of him and we ask you to share your Loki stories with us. Thank you all for being so loving and supportive. We can never say thank you enough. And to Loki, we love you forever little buddy."
They then posted a selection of their favourite photos of their beloved little pet. Who, despite being bald and incredibly grumpy-looking, was actually really rather sweet. And clearly beloved by his family as much as he was by his adoring fans - Loki's Instagram account currently has over 78,000 followers.
Hopefully there are whole mountains made of catnip up in Cat Heaven for him to enjoy.
