Former PM Kevin07 Tackles The Handball Court To Show Kids Who’s Boss

The video 'Kev gon give it to ya' has gone viral for all the right reasons - but does he live up to his reputation?

It's weird to think it's been a decade since the days of Kevin07, which was arguably the most popular political election nickname this side of 2000. When Kevin Rudd rose through those ranks in Canberra, he came across as your average bloke who appealed to the masses.

Say what you want about his policies, his leadership, his battle with Julia Gillard or anything else to do with his time in parliament, it's hard to argue against the idea that he's the best politician at handball. The pool for potential rivals is small, or actually virtually non-existent, as most MPs, from memory, haven't displayed their skills just yet.

He billed himself as quite the champion on his recent Reddit AMA, saying: "I know I am seen as the handball champ of the Southern Hemisphere. In fact, I have challenged one of our local schools here in Brisbane to a match."

Kevin07 rocked up to Kelvin Grove High School to show he was still the man on the four-square court.

Some critics would argue he wasn't really dressed for the occasion, opting for a shirt, suit pants and formal shoes, which everyone knows wouldn't provide optimal support for the likes of handball.

The video, aptly titled 'Kev Gon Give It To Ya', has been uploaded to Facebook page Handball Memes, with more than 1.7 million people viewing it and the majority of people have been impressed with his skills.

One person wrote: "Good to see that life away from politics has let Kevin develop his handball game. Priorities straight."

Another viewer said: "The big man at the squares and there's a crowd of about 40. Kids have no appreciation of national treasures these days."

However, this person seemed to crack the code as to why and how KRudd is so good, writing: "Rudd came of age in the early 70s. 70s handball in Nambour was about as tough as it gets; it's basically a different sport compared to the namby-pamby, play-it-safe, not-too-rough-lads style of play that's common today."

This game at Kelvin Grove High School has been years in the making, with the schoolkids keen to get him on the court following his loss at the 2013 election. Head of senior schooling, Duncan Steel, told the ABC: "The year 12s when they were in our middle school wanted him to come out, but at the time he was busy.

"They got back onto his Facebook page and asked him if he could play, since it was their last year."

Mr Steel was pretty impressed with the former Prime Minister's ability, adding: "He's pretty competitive and he's pretty good on the handball court. He wouldn't shift from the top square of the handball court."

The crown hasn't officially been handed to Mr Rudd for handball king, but it does thrust him up on the list of sporty Aussie politicians. John Howard is a keen walker and not too shabby with a cricket bat, Tony Abbott loves a swim and even a triathlon, Bob Hawke has a big affinity for cricket as well but would easily win gold at any beer sculling competition.
