Tropical fruits seem an unusual choice

When you're thinking of traditional Halloween decorations, tropical fruits probably aren't the first things that immediately spring to mind.

However, as perfectly evidenced by the good people of Instagram, they can actually work pretty well. This year, Halloween lovers are ditching the traditional pumpkin jack-o-lanterns in favour of something a little more...exotic.

Pineapples are the weapon of choice for the spookiest day of 2017 and to be honest, we do feel like their general spikiness adds a certain something to the overall vibe...

The only real downside is that the fruit's rough exterior can reduce your carving options a tad. However, the soft juicy flesh is definitely a lot easier to work with.

If you want to give it a go for yourself, you'll want to approach it in much the same way as you would approach carving a pumpkin.

First get a sharp knife and remove the top of the pineapple - don't throw it away though!

Next, core the pineapple, creating a nice hollow shell to work with.

Now the fun part. Use the knife to carve a face into your pineapple - and feel free to get creative.

The only catch, as YouTubers have warned, is that a pineapple jack-o-lantern won't last for quite as long as a pumpkin. Still though, its a small price to pay for a truly unique Halloween decoration. Oh, and they smell great too!
