'Karma Is A Bitch' Is The Latest Weird Trend In China

It's the new trend sweeping China, and although it's weird as hell, it's still better than all the Tide Pod nonsense.

Let us introduce you to the Karma is a Bitch challenge. It's currently sweeping China, but will no doubt get global pretty soon.

It's also weird AF - and you're going to reeeeally enjoy finding out more about it. Watch some baffling examples here:

It's essentially a bunch of people turning themselves into a meme, mimicking the feeling of when you rock up to a party in front of all the haters (exes, bullies, etc.) looking like a baller.

It requires them to film a video of themselves lip syncing to the line 'Karma is a bitch' - the origins of which are the sixth episode of Riverdale's second season, when character Veronica Lodge says the line after hearing about a tragic car accident.

The video begins with the person looking a bit like they've been down with the flu - pyjamas, no makeup, bed hair and the like. They then dramatically throw a scarf, sheet or some other kind of material in front of the camera, before pulling it back down for the big reveal, showing that they're actually a legend, having morphed into a full face of makeup, sick garms and an all-round badass attitude.

While all this is going on, 2011 hip hop song 'Gucci Gucci' by Kreayshawn plays in the background.

It's essentially a meme version of all of those scenes in films where ugly-but-not-actually-ugly-at-all people are given a drastic transformation and suddenly have all the jocks and prom queens falling at their feet. You know, they just take their glasses off and pluck their eyebrows and suddenly become destined for popularity.

Many people are making the videos on a Chinese video app called Dou Yin, which allows its users to create 15-second music videos. It also lets users add face filters and effects, and can be edited.

To be honest, we're just kind of glad it's taking the attention away from the tide pod challenge. After all, for every person videoing themselves miming 'Karma is a bitch', that's one person who's not chowing down on capsules of laundry detergent.

"You'll get burns to the skin, burns to the eyes, and a lot of problems that are more severe. Burns to the respiratory tract, burns to the oesophagus," Dr. Joe Krug told WXIN, explaining the dangers of the Tide Pod Challenge.

Procter & Gamble - Tide's parent company - has already issued a statement responding to the fad, basically reiterating what should really be common sense: just don't do it.

So, yeah, I never thought I'd say this, but can we all just move on to Karma is a Bitch now, please?
