A man in Louisiana took the 'gender reveal' trend and tipped it on its head - with the help of an alligator, no less.

'Gator King' Mike Kliebert and his wife, Rebecca Miller, invited their loved ones round to reveal the gender of their unborn child. Normally, people go for the slightly twee and cutesy route when going for a gender reveal - using something like a glitter cannon or a cake that reveals blue or pink sponge once cut - but this couple decided to be a bit less traditional.

Mike posted a four-and-a-half minute video of the reveal to Facebook, which showed him feeding a small watermelon to a live 60-year-old alligator called Sally.

When Sally chomped down on the fruit, she revealed blue liquid - breaking the news that Mike and Rebecca would be expecting a baby boy, much to the delight of cheering partygoers.

The clip has not only racked up thousands of views online, but also divided its viewers - with some believing the use of the alligator is cruel, while others seeing it as the cleverest gender reveal they've seen.

"Who tf antagonises an animal for entertainment? Y'all couldn't cut a cake or take one of your guns and pop a balloon like normal people?" one person commented on the post.

"Disgusting," another wrote.

One person, responding to a later post, said: "It's absolutely disgusting how you and your family treated this alligator! All for a gender reveal.

"Animals are not party props, they're especially not the kind of props your ENTIRE family sits on while you tape its mouth shut!"

Others, meanwhile, had nothing but congratulations for the innovative couple.

One said: "This is AMAZING!!!! Congrats Rebecca and Mike!!!! Officially sending a package your way!!!"

Another wrote: "That's how ya do it Louisiana style. Congratulations."

Another said: "The best gender reveal I've ever seen hands down."

Mike has since also defended his video - and comments about the safety of children at the party - in a later post, writing: "People are jealous and I guess they assume they know it all.

"The little boy almost eaten lol is hilarious cause that little boy is my son! He's 9 and knows more about alligators than what anyone could ever imagine."

He continues to say that he respects animals and undestands alligators, as it's his 'livelihood'.

"I am having a baby boy and he will see this awesome gender reveal," he added.
