Why did the alligator cross the road? Well, we don't actually know, but by the looks of things he was just bringing home the bacon to the wife and kids - the bacon being an unidentified bloody carcass, that is.

The video of the particularly hench gator dragging its dinner across the road has gone viral, after it was shared by a bloke called Daniel Martin.

Martin had been driving in South Carolina last weekend with his son, who he was on a camping trip with, the Daily Mail reports.

You can imagine their surprise when they looked out onto the highway and spotted a large alligator walking slowly across the road... dragging its dinner behind it, creating quite the gruesome scene for Daniel and his kid as they waited patiently for the reptile to pass.

"Wow, that's a big alligator," Daniel says in shock in the video.

"And there's a fish or something in the middle of the road. He's coming to eat it."

Eventually the alligator slopes off with its new meal, and Daniel is able to drive off.

Sharing the incredible footage on Facebook, Daniel wrote: "My alligator encounter last night while camping. He was dragging a big dead fish across the road."

One person commented to joke that it was good of the alligator to move the food away from the road 'so you can drive'. Nice gator, what a fella.

The Mail adds that we're in peak mating season for alligators right now - which is between May and June - so it's not uncommon to see them out and about looking for a mate.

Because of this, alligator sightings have been fairly common throughout the southeast United States recently.

Sadly, one woman is thought to have been killed by an alligator while walking her dogs - after an arm believed to belong to Shizuka Matsuki was found inside the stomach of a reptile in south Florida.

Her body was then recovered from the nearby lake by search teams.

In a statement, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said: "The victim of this tragic incident has been identified as Shizuka Matsuki, 47 years of age, of Plantation, Florida.

"This tragedy is heartbreaking for everyone involved, and our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim at this time."

One of the dogs that belonged to Matsuki also suffered some injuries after it 'got bit by the gator', as Davie Police Major Dale Engle told the Sun Sentinel, and the alligator thought to have been involved in the attack has since been captured and killed.
