Owen Wilson's unique way of saying the word 'wow' has been attracting some serious renewed attention of late.

Aside from gettting coverage on the Ellen DeGeneres show, last week some hardcore fans of Wilson's 'wow' planned an event in Melbourne, Australia dedicated solely to the Royal Tenenbaums actor's utterance of astonishment.

Now we can confirm that yesterday's 'wowathon' in honour of Wilson's iconic way of saying 'wow' went ahead in the city's Federation Square yesterday afternoon - and it was indeed 'wow'-worthy.

Videos of the flash mob, organised over Facebook by Owen Wilson fanpage Owen Wilson Wowposting, show hundreds of people attending the event to bust out their best 'wow' impression.

"Let's put some positivity out there into the world! Let's marvel at the beauty and Wonder of this incredible planet we live on, and let's WOW like Owen Wilson!" the event page read, in an attempt to gee people up.

"Invite your friends! Crashing Weddings is so 2005, so let's crash Fed Square instead!"

The event saw Owen Wilson lovers slowly gathering under a banner of Wilson in the square, while many others brought homemade banners of their own.

As promised, the event started with a 'hype speech from admin' - a few words from the creator of the Facebook page that brought everyone together for this moment of joint folly.

Once the warm-up was over with, it was time for the group to start letting rip, and they didn't disappoint.

Although hundreds of people showed up, the event didn't turn out to be as epic as anticipated - according to the Facebook event page, over 5,000 planned to attend while a whopping 18,000 said they were interested, although we all know no one takes Facebook events seriously.

Still, the actual turnout was nothing to sniff at and was testament to the power of the Internet to pull people together for a cause. Even if that cause was pointless but very, very fun.

Could events like this become a regular fixture for Owen Wilson fans? If not, they'll always have Melbourne.
