The Man Behind 'Blinking Guy' Meme Has Spoken About His Post-Meme Life

The Man Behind 'Blinking Guy' Meme Has Spoken About His Post-Meme Life

He's one of the biggest memes of 2017, and he seems to be handling the whole thing pretty well

One of my biggest fears is waking up one day to find I've become a meme - everyone sharing photos of your face and being recognised when you're out about. All the drawbacks of fame, with none of the cash. Fuck that.

However, one of 2017s most beloved memes - the white guy blinking - has taken part in a TV interview to talk about how his life has changed since he was plastered all over the Internet, and he seems to think it's been a pretty cool experience - surprised?

Drew Scanlon was on Good Morning America yesterday to have a chat about his post-meme life. During the interview he observed: "We don't really have a way of communicating body language over the Internet, like with text or anything, and memes are kind of that." Fair point, that.

Speaking to Thrillist, Drew said: "It's been weirder for the people who know me than it has been for me."

And when it comes to his favourite example of his face being used as a meme, he chose this one:

He said: "That showed the perfect way for [the GIF] to be used. It was just a really well-crafted tweet."

The clip actually dates back to 2013, when Drew was working as a video producer for gaming website Giant Bomb. During one of the team's weekly live streams, while talking about Starbound, Drew's editor Jeff Gerstmann said: "I've been doing some farming, with my hoe." And the reaction from Drew was the one we all know and love.

During his time at Giant Bomb, Drew became a GIF several times over, however, it's his surprised blink that really caught on.

He reckons it's because 2017 has been such a shit-storm. He told Thrillist: "I think the pervasiveness of it also has to do with the fact that there are so many crazy things happening in 2017.

"If it was more of a calmer year maybe we wouldn't see it as much."

Drew wrapped up the interview by requesting that people 'use it wisely'... good luck with that, mate.
