A mum in the US has clearly been unable to wait for April Fools' Day, having sent her husband on a fool's errand after he refused to help out around the house.

Countless apprentices down the years have been sent to fetch glass hammers, long weights and striped paint, but Karen Alpert went a step further, compiling her husband an entire shopping list of non-existent items.

The blogger, better known as Baby Sideburns, shared the list on her Facebook page and said she made it to get revenge on her husband after he spent the morning idly lying about the house.

The impossible items she listed were as follows: three per cent milk, seedless strawberries, fat-free hummus, wheat thins (the ones in the blue box), unsour cream, diet diet coke (you might ask because it's new), mellow cheese and organic Pop Tarts.

Karen got revenge on her husband by sending him to the grocery store on a fool's errand.

Captioning the photo of the list she wrote: "OMG my hubby has been lying on the couch all morning while I'm doing sooooo much stuff so I finally got super annoyed and sent him to the grocery store... with a special shopping list. And yes I turned my ringer off."

The post quickly went viral, receiving more than 64,000 reactions, 55,000 shares and 18,000 comments.

Many of these comments were from other wives who said their husbands would also be duped by the prank.

One person said: "Showed my hubby the list...

"Hubby: 'oh so he can take a minute?'

"I'm like 'no babe, these things are made up.'

"(Insert hubby's confused face here )

"Hubby: 'I could've sworn, I've seen organic poptarts & 3% milk'

This'll teach Karen's husband for relaxing on the sofa.

Another person added: "I sent my man to the store for black pepper and he text saying 'I only see red green and yellow peppers. No black.'

A third said: "This is awesome! But to my husband even a regular list would pose the same challenges."

But others thought the joke may backfire on Karen.

One person said: "Jokes on her. All he read was: Milk, Strawberries, Hummus, Snack chips, Coke, Pop tarts.

"He'll be home in 25 mins and twenty of that is driving."

It's unclear how Karen's husband got on with his shop though... Rumour has it he is still scouring the dairy aisle, in search of unsour cream.
