The Darwin Awards are a 'tongue in cheek' honour that recognises the sheer stupidity of humankind. Their tagline is 'Chlorinating The Gene Pool', strongly (some might say 'harshly') implying these 'winners' can make our species better as a result of their own death or sterilisation.

A group of Aussies are lucky enough to have survived one of the stupidest stunts imaginable, which means they won't be eligible for the 2017 Darwin Award.

However, their incredible lack of fucks given has been recognised around the world for putting themselves at serious risk of death.

The four men were pictured hanging around a baited crocodile trap in Port Douglas, far north Queensland.

To make matters worse, there was a fatal crocodile attack in that area recently.

Douglas Shire mayor Julie Leu has told ABC Radio: "I was absolutely gobsmacked, this is incredibly stupid and dangerous behaviour. I'm wondering if these fellows are vying for the idiots of the year award or the idiots of the century award."

The state's Environment Minister Steven Miles added to AAP: "You've got grown men swimming in a crocodile trap, exactly where we put the bait for the crocodiles. The reason the trap is there is because we suspect there are crocodiles in the area.

"The trap is dangerous in and of itself, and of course if the crocodile were to appear that would be even more dangerous."

The photos provoked a fierce reaction on social media, with people condemning them for their stupidity. One person wrote: "There sure are some fools in this world. And they'd be the first ones to scream for help from emergency services if they got into trouble."

Another said: "Too bad the croc wasn't around. Could've seen natural selection in action. Predator vs stupid."

If the four men are caught, they could face fines of up to $15,000 under new rules designed to punish those who interfere with crocodile traps. The area just experienced the death of an elderly grandmother, whose remains were found inside a large crocodile.

It's believed Anne Cameron, 79, became disorientated on a walk and stumbled into bushland. The death sparked calls from the Katter party for more control measures imposed on crocodiles in the area.

Queensland's Department of Environment and Heritage Production is calling for anyone with information about the four men to come forward.

A spokesperson has told news.com.au: "It is extremely dangerous to interfere with a crocodile trap, regardless of whether or not there is a crocodile within.

"It is not an exaggeration to say that interfering with crocodile traps can be potentially life-threatening for the person concerned.

"It also places the general public at risk if the trap is tampered with in such a way that it becomes inoperative, hampering the ability of the Department to deliver its important public safety role."
