Andrew Garfield becomes Oscars meme for second year running

"It would not be a legit Oscar night without Andrew Garfield being a meme."

It really wouldn't be the Oscars without Andrew Garfield being one of the main stars of the show, would it?

And for a second year running, the Spider-Man actor has cemented himself as a true Oscars meme, as an awkward grin caught on camera went viral overnight.

The 39-year-old became centre of attention once more at the 95th Academy Awards, when host Jimmy Kimmel, of course, made a joke about Will Smith's infamous Oscars slap last year in his opening monologue.

Kimmel started his opening lines with: "We want you to have fun, we want you to be safe and we want me to be safe.

“If any person in this theatre commits an act of violence, you will be awarded best actor and be allowed to give a 19-minute speech.”

He then told audiences that, in order to get to him, they would have to go through Michael B. Jordan, Michelle Yeoh, Pedro Pascal and his side-kick Guillermo.

Kimmel also joked that anyone hoping to recreate last year would also have to go through Spider-Man, and then the camera fixed on Garfield who smiled awkwardly to viewers.

Many Oscars viewers flocked to social media following the moment, with one fan writing: "It would not be a legit Oscar night without Andrew Garfield being a meme."

A second added: "One more Oscars day one more day Andrew Garfield becomes the main meme from the night he doesn't lose anything," while a third remarked: "Andrew Garfield being the Oscars meme for the 2nd year."

And a fourth said: "I need that Andrew Garfield smile as a reaction image, stat."

It is the second year running Garfield has become an Oscars meme.

Last year, he quickly became a viral meme as he was filmed texting under the table in the immediate aftermath of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock.

In April 2022, while appearing on ABC's The View, Garfield was asked about who he was texting, to which the Tick Tick... Boom! star replied: "That’s none of your business."

But Garfield then expressed his regret for missing Kevin Costner’s introduction to the Best Director nominees, which had followed the slap.

He said: "I feel so bad because Kevin Costner’s introducing the director nominees in the most beautiful and elegant way, and I’m like, ‘There’s no way I’m going to be on camera during this'.

"Everyone’s texting me, asking me, like, what the vibe in the room is. At that moment, my friends took priority over Kevin."
