Alan Jones has been on the airwaves for decades and has commanded a massive audience of people who listen to his every word.

He has an immense power not only over his listeners but also over politicians and businesses across Australia.

Jones is known for attracting headlines however last Thursday he divided opinion over what he said about the New Zealand Prime Minister and her role during the Pacific Island climate change talks.

ABC

On his morning radio programme on 2GB and 4BC, Jones said Jacinda Ardern was a 'joke', a 'clown' and that Scott Morrison should 'shove a sock down her throat'.

"Here she is preaching on global warming and saying that we've got to do something about climate change," he said on the Alan Jones Breakfast Show.

"I just wonder whether Scott Morrison is going to be fully briefed to shove a sock down her throat. She is a joke this woman, an absolute and utter lightweight.

"These people are an absolute joke and Jacinda Ardern is the biggest joke."

While there were some people who backed Jones on the comments, it's clear that his employer, Macquarie Media, isn't happy.

Macquarie Media chairman Russell Tate said in a statement: "On Thursday on his 2GB and 4BC breakfast show, Alan Jones made certain comments in respect of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, which caused offence to many people.

"Recognising the offence caused by his remarks, Alan on Friday publicly apologised for them.

"In his apology, Alan recognised that his comments were 'careless, unnecessary and wrong', and 'should have been more clearly thought out'.

"Notwithstanding his apologies, I have today discussed the matter with Alan and advised him that any recurrence of commentary of this nature will result in the termination of his contract."

Jones has been involved in several defamation cases over the course of his career.

However his arguably most high-profiled issue arose in 2012 when he was making a speech at a Sydney University Liberal Club social function. He told the attendees that then-Prime Minister Julia Gillard was a liar and that her father 'died of shame'.

The shock jock held a press conference where he apologised for the comments, saying he 'got it wrong' and indicated his desire to call Ms Gillard to apologise personally.

It would be a stunning move by Macquarie Media if Jones was sacked as he has been number one in his slot year on year for more than 100 consecutive radio rating surveys.
