Zac Efron has shared the first picture of him in his latest role as American serial killer Ted Bundy for new flick Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile.

So those of you who loved him in his role as singing basketball player Troy in High School Musical are going to be in for a bit of a shock as he plays one of America's most prolific serial killers.

The film is set to tell the story of the murders from the point of view of Bundy's girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer (played by Lily Collins), who, for years, refused to believe that Bundy had carried out the murders.

Copying Efron's 'Meet Ted' post, Collins also shared a snap of herself in character as 'Liz' to social media.

In an interview with Buzzfeed, Efron, 30, said he was looking forward to the role. "Ted Bundy is going to be a challenge," he said. "I think it's going to be different and it's going to be fun. I'm super stoked."

According to Bundy's lawyer John Henry Browne, Efron is an ideal choice for the role, as he is a 'charming heartthrob'. He told TMZ that Bundy's persona as a smooth-talking, good-looking guy was how he was able to carry out his crimes.

The film also stars John Malkovich as Judge Edward Cowart, who presided over Bundy's televised trial and imposed the death penalty.

Bundy admitted to killing 30 women and girls between 1974 and 1978 - but officials believe the number could actually be higher. He was arrested a number of times before he was eventually linked to the murders.

He was arrested for aggravtated kidnap and attempted criminal assault in 1975, but while facing murder charges in Colorado managed to escape from jail twice - while on the run, he carried out further assaults, including three more murders. He was recaptured for the final time in 1978 and given three death sentences in two trials.

He was put to death, via the electric chair in 1989.

Production on the film, which is director by Joe Berlinger, is set to start today, but as yet no release date has been given.
