The DCEU can be tricky to get your head around and now Warner Brothers will be making it that little extra bit more confusing by putting out a standalone film, telling the origins of DC villain, The Joker. However, this time the part won't be played by Jared Leto.

Leto received mixed to negative reviews for his portrayal of one of the DC universe's more interesting characters, but given that he was taking up the mantle from the late Heath Ledger and the legendary Jack Nicholson before him, he was always going to have a lot to live up to.

However, while Leto will be reprising his role for an upcoming film featuring The Joker and Harley Quinn, it's rumoured to be none other than Leonardo DiCaprio who will be taking the part in the new Joker origins movie.

More surprising still perhaps, is the involvement of esteemed film director Martin Scorsese, who will be co-producing the upcoming flick and will no doubt be used as bait in an attempt to snare DiCaprio for the leading role.

News of the project surfaced last month, with DC and Warner Bros. announced to be in works to develop a 1980's set film, tracing the origins of the Joker.

As far as the tone of the film goes, fans shouldn't go into it expecting another DC movie. Instead, they should prepare themselves for a gritty affair, reminiscent of Scorsese's 80's work, such as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, which will be set in Gotham City in the same era. Sounds good if you ask me.

In terms of direction, The Hangover's Todd Philips will be at the helm.

All sounds good, if not slightly insane, up to now but one person who isn't overly happy about the news is current joker Jared Leto, who has made his distaste at there being another green-haired villain about town known, according to sources.

However, the actor/musician will don his facepaint again for a rumoured 'Joker and Harley Quinn' movie in which Leto and Margot Robbie will reprise their respective roles.

Despite taking his role back up, Leto was unimpressed at the amount of his scenes in Suicide Squad that ended up getting cut, as he explained to IGN in an interview.

"Were there any that didn't get cut? I'm asking you, were there any that didn't get cut? There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn't even start. I think that the Joker... we did a lot of experimentation on the set, we explored a lot. There's so much that we shot that's not in the film.

"If I die anytime soon, it's probably likely that it'll surface somewhere. That's the good news about the death of an actor is all that stuff seems to come out."
