It's been three long years since we were blessed with a timely dose of post-apocalyptic motor madness in the form of Mad Max: Fury Road, but now main man Tom Hardy has confirmed there's more to come.

The actor, who is currently at Comic-Con to promote his upcoming Venom film, told Variety that he was just waiting for the go ahead.

Hardy said: "It was always the plan to do three of them, so I think we're still waiting on being given the opportunity and the green light to go ahead on the next one. But when I engaged on that there was a plethora of material on it."

Warner Bros.

He continued: "Obviously it belongs to Warner Brothers so it would be them who green-lit it. But a lot of projects are in radial, you know you wait for something to land when it's real, and as soon as it's real we'll jump on it."

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise to fans and Hardy has previously said himself that it was never a question of 'if' but more of 'when'.

He told the audience at a Television Critics Association panel last year: "There's mythology to do with Mad Max that spans copious amounts of tales.

"What's wonderful about George [Miller, series, writer/director] is that he's created sagas for Max and sagas for Furiosa [played by Charlize Theron], so it's what he chooses to focus in on.

"I'm really just waiting for the call like, 'All right, let's get the leathers on and get back out there and do some more.'

"It's there. I'm just waiting for it and looking forward to it."

He added: "It's a question of when. I'm not sure it's called The Wasteland or not 'cause you never know. These titles change all the time. But, there's definitely another Mad Max project pending."

Another Mad Max film could still be a while off but there's more Tom Hardy action to keep you busy in the meantime in the shape of Venom.

Hardy spoke more about it at Comic Con, telling the audience about what drew him to the script.

"There's my son, and he's a massive Venom fan. He was a very strong influence on me as to why I ought to play Venom specifically.

"So I wanted to do something that my son could watch. A lot of the films I've done are normally pretty aggressive or violent, or I swear a lot, so I did something where I bite people's heads off - so my son still can't see it."
