Christian Bale is no stranger to undergoing some pretty impressive transformations for various characters, but usually he still looks like the Christian Bale that we all know and love. However, this latest role has seen him become someone that barely resembles the Academy Award winning actor.

The 43-year-old is down to play Dick Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States for the film Backseat, which has only just got underway filming.

Bale was last month pictured on the red carpet with a bit more bulk in his face and now we know why. Cheney obviously wasn't as shredded as Batman during his time in office between 2001 and 2009 when he served under George W Bush.

Amy Adams (Arrival, American Hustle) has joined the cast for Backseat to play Dick's wife Lynne, while Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2, Seven Psychopaths) will become Mr Bush. Comedic actor Steve Carrell will be Donald Rumsfeld, the 13th and 21st Secretary of Defence, while LisaGay Hamilton (The Soloist, The Practice) will be Condoleezza Rice.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival, Bale told Variety he was doing one thing in particular to get into shape for the role: "I'm just eating a lot of pies so far."

Ah, wouldn't we all enjoy that...?

He previously had to gain a lot of weight for the 2013 film American Hustle, where he told OTRC.com: "It's easy to start with... you're just sitting on your butt and you're eating lots of doughnuts and eating bread and everything like that. But you do it for two months and your body starts to rebel against you, it's just saying, 'No, please', and your back is aching and there's also some problems with that.

"And then you've got to lose the weight at the end of it, you know? I wish it was simple."

He's been on both side of the weight spectrum throughout his career. He got absolutely hench for Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy and American Psycho, but then looked worryingly skinny and emaciated for The Machinist.

In that role, Bale wanted to drop to 45kg, but the filmmakers refused due to health concerns, so he was hovering around 54kg once shooting started. His daily diet consisted of water, an apple and one cup of coffee per day, and an occasional small glass of whisky.

I think we'd all prefer the pies and doughnuts diet compared to that one.
