The girlfriend of teenage Coronation Street star Alex Bain has announced that she is pregnant, the Sun reports.

His girlfriend - who is 16 years old - made the announcement on Facebook, sharing a photo of her 12-week scan. She captioned the photo 'December 8', potentially revealing the due date of their baby.

She tagged Bain, also 16, in the photo.

Bain plays Simon, the troubled son of Peter Barlow - and grandson of Ken Barlow - on Coronation Street, having been part of the cast for 10 years.

In 2011 he won an accolade for Best Young Performance at the British Soap Awards.

According to the Sun, Bain goes to school in Lancashire, where he is currently taking his GCSEs.

A source reportedly told the newspaper: "Alex has been telling everyone he's going to be a father. He isn't keeping it a secret.

"It's hard to tell if he's happy about it or not but he's definitely not ashamed of it.

"But some people have been saying how young he is to be having a baby.

"It's only happened to one other person at his school in recent years so it is pretty shocking."

The source added: "He's probably just aiming to get through his exams so he can concentrate on his acting - and now a baby."

Bain and his girlfriend have apparently been together since April last year.

Friends, family and fans have congratulated the couple on Facebook, with many sharing their own experiences of young parenthood or pregnancy.

One Corrie lover wrote: "Congratulations to you and Alex I'm a massive fan of Simon! Also I'm 17 and pregnant with my first baby due 2nd December! It's the best thing being pregnant enjoy every moment."

Another person wrote: "Congratulations to you both!! Going to make fab parents. Ignore the negative comments about both of your ages and becoming young parents. I'm also a young mum, and believe me when they say you are ruining your life etc, it's not true at all, your life is only now beginning and you will never feel such love of that of a parents. Raising a child can get tough at times, but it's so rewarding."

Someone else said: "Although you don't know me congratulations to you both. P.S. I was pregnant with my son when I was 16 and he was due the same day (arrived the day late tho). Block out all the negativity and good luck."
