Mel B has confessed to snorting up to six lines of cocaine a day during her stint as a judge on The X Factor, as revealed in her new autobiography 'Brutally Honest'.

In the book - which has been serialised by The Sun - the 43-year-old Spice Girls member speaks about not only why she took up the drug but also the attempt to take her own life.

She opened up about taking nearly 200 painkillers in 2014 as she appeared on the live shows of The X Factor and wrote about feeling 'ugly and detested by the very man who once promised to love and protect me'.

Mel B, real name Melanie Brown, described herself as a 'sad, pathetic person' and 'out of control' when she admits she snorted two lines of cocaine from the moment she woke up to deal with the stress of filming the ITV talent competition.

She said: "Then I would pray, 'God, I'm sorry for taking cocaine, but please God help me get through this day'.

"It numbed my pain. It lifted me up enough to be ready to fire on all cylinders and forget about everything but the show."

Regarding the overdose, the star had to have a stand in for the Saturday night semi-final but did make an appearance the following evening wearing an outfit that revealed her bruises - which at the time she blamed on having a stomach ulcer.

It wasn't just The X Factor that Mel was struggling with at the time as she wrote about her abusive ten-year marriage to Stephen Belafonte.

She says: "I was so low that two weeks into filming The X Factor I'd started using cocaine to get me through the run of the show. To get me through living with Stephen, which felt like neurotic claustrophobia."

Although she was on the illegal drug throughout her time on The X Factor, she doesn't think they impaired her judgement as she never took the drug during the show.

She writes: "Once I was at work I didn't need anything and I didn't take anything. I'd crack jokes with Simon and the other judges and have a laugh with the crew."

Along with her cocaine addiction the Spice Girls star also wrote about how she'd turn to plastic surgery as her marriage began to break down and even had a surgery on her boobs that didn't go to plan.

She said: "I had surgery on my boobs and there were complications, but I didn't have them corrected."

Mel split from her ex-husband with their £10million divorce battle played out in a public Los Angeles courtroom.

According to The Sun, judges were told that Stephen had punched Mel in a jealous rage before choking her and slamming her into the floor.
