Mike Myers made a touching tribute to co-star Verne Troyer following his tragic death last month.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! the Austin Powers star said he was blown away when he first met Troyer.

"Every day you see him, you go 'Wow! That is a small human'," he said. "But by the end of the day, you just saw Verne. It just sort of went away...He was part of the cast and fantastic.

"I miss him."

Speaking about the popularity of Mini-Me, he added: "A great comedian. I always want to make that point.

"As written, Mini-Me is like almost a prop, but he brought it up off the page, made it better than written, and we ended up giving him more and more stuff to do."

Adding he was: "Just a fantastic guy."

Looking tearful, Myers told Kimmel that he attended the funeral of Troyer, who died on 21 April aged just 49.

"He died at 49. He wasn't supposed to live past his teens.

"You saw 150 years worth of life in this photo montage."

He then told a story about being invited to the White House by former President Barrack Obama, who was also hosting the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - and that upon meeting him, both world leaders immediately asked: "How's Mini-Me?"

"Verne brought so much love to people, do you know what I mean?" he added.

Speaking on The View in 2008, Myers heaped praise on Troyer saying: "I had written Mini-Me to not talk, but within five minutes of meeting Verne I was, like, 'what an idiot, this guy is so funny'.

"But you know, the train had sailed, but in the back of my head I was, like, 'I gotta write something where this guy can talk'."

The character was so popular, scriptwriters reportedly had to change the ending of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me because evil clone Mini-Me was supposed to die, but audiences didn't want that.

Speaking on Oprah: Where Are They Now? Troyer said: "When they did a test screening, Mini-Me died at the end.

"We had to go back and reshoot that because the crowd was upset that Mini-Me was no longer there."

Myers and Troyer worked on three films together, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Austin Powers: Goldmember and The Love Guru.

The pair built up a friendship and mutual respect of each other, with Troyer saying: "Working with Mike was great. He improv'd a lot. It just kept you on your toes."
