'Modern Family' Actress Sarah Hyland Criticised For 'Inappropriate' Golden Globes Video

While clearly meant in jest, the close-to-the-bone content didn't go down too well with some people.

The Golden Globes garnered a great deal of attention this year, with stars donning black in solidarity with the #MeToo and Time's Up campaigns. What's more, Sterling K. Brown became the first African-American actor to win the Best Actor in a TV Drama accolade, Aziz Ansari became the first Asian-American to be named Best Actor in a TV Comedy - and, of course, Oprah gave the speech to end all speeches.

But it seems not all the attention was of the good kind. Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland and InStyle magazine managed to raise a few eyebrows with an 'inappropriate' Instagram video posted after the ceremony:

The video was part of a 'Golden Globes elevator' Instagram series from InStyle, who shared it with the caption: "Cheers to a wonderful night! @SarahHyland takes the first ride in the elevator at our #GoldenGlobesparty."

The actress also posted the video, captioning it: "2018 starting off great. Tip #1: When you drink alone. Drink alone w/ #JohntheBellHop @instylemagazine #goldenglobes party".

In the 12-second clip, the doors slide open to reveal Hyland leaning on an old man operating the lift, swigging on a bottle of champagne. She removes his hat and puts it on, while he puts his hand around her waist.

Pretending to be drunk, she tries to stumble out, only to fall back into his arms. He puts his arms around her, the two laughing, and the doors close again.

While clearly meant in jest, the close-to-the-bone content didn't go down too well with some people, who felt it was in particularly bad taste given the recent Harvey Weinstein scandal, and the #MeToo and Time's Up campaigns.

Hyland defended the video, brushing it off by saying on Twitter: "#JohntheBellHop is a very nice old man. FYI. *completely sober*".

Other social media users also didn't see the issue, explaining that the man was simply doing a good thing by catching her as she fell, and that their was nothing 'handsy' about it.
