Comedian Sarah Silverman has come in for strong backlash after someone has dug up one of her tweets from 2009 in which she jokes about child molestation.

In the recently unearthed tweet, she wrote: "Hey, is it considered molestation if the child makes the first move? I'm gonna need a quick answer on this."

And has since faced harsh criticism for joking about such an issue, with some even branding her a 'paedophile'.

However, Silverman has now hit back at those who hit back at her saying it was from a time when such jokes were accepted as just jokes.

But many fans of the 47-year-old have been left less than impressed with explanation of the tweet, with one replying: "It's not a joking matter."

And another posting: "Clearly nothing funny about that tweet. No way you say it, spin it or twist it, the fact remains it was tasteless and a head-turner."

Silverman is the latest celebrity to have some old tweets resurface and cause them a bit of trouble.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was recently dumped from working on the sequel due to some of his old tweets in which he made bizarre jokes about rape and paedophila.

After being fired, Gunn released a statement in which he said: "My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative.

"I have regretted them for many years since - not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don't reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.

"Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then.

"All I can do now, beyond my sincere and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be: accepting, understanding, committed to equality, and far more thoughtful about my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse.

"To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies. Love to all."
