Russell Brand speaks out on Katy Perry marriage after infamously sending text to request divorce

Russell Brand speaks out on Katy Perry marriage after infamously sending text to request divorce

After a whirlwind romance over a decade ago, the celebrity couple divorced in 2012

A tumultuous celebrity relationship isn’t something new on the scene, but it’s definitely something different when the deciding party speaks out on TV about their failed marriage.

that’s exactly what British comedian, Russell Brand, 48, did when he went on a wild adventure for our entertainment.

During an episode of the infamously extreme survival show, Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge, Brand opened up about his struggles with fame and his ‘chaotic’ life during the time that he was married to pop singer, Katy Perry, 38.

As it’s universal knowledge that the pair tied the knot in 2010, in a strange and unexpecting coupling, their short-lived marriage ended just as suddenly.

It’s also something that we viewers got to see a sneak peek of as the Firework singer was filming her Katy Perry: Part of Me movie at the time.

In the film, it showed Perry backstage preparing to go out and sing a hit, when suddenly she looked at a text and began to cry hysterically.

It was only after the feature was released that we learned that this was the moment she had been asked for a divorce by her husband, on New Year's Eve.

While bathing in nature with Grylls, Brand said he was “chaotic and disconnected” during his yearlong marriage, stating that: "Some aspects of it were, like, amazing.”

"She's an amazing person, and it was kind of incredible to live for a moment in that eye of the cyclone-type aspect of fame,” he continued.

"Aside from my sort of feelings of affection for Katy, it's a time that I remember being a little bit chaotic and a bit, for me, to speak for myself, a little disconnected."

But it’s not the first time the actor and comedian has publicly spoken about his 2010 marriage as he recently took to TikTok to share some insights with fans.

"I really tried in that relationship," he confessed.

"I have nothing but positive feelings for her."

Perry went on to have a child with Orlando Bloom in 2020.

Though their relationship lasted only 14 months, they still remain respectful of each other, especially Perry who spoke to 60 Minutes in 2020 about her life.

She explained: "I was having great success at 23, 24 and 25 and then I met someone that was interesting and stimulating.”

"It was just like a tornado, it was everything happening at once... [I] have always resonated with friction and resistance, and challenges."

She also released an exclusive to Vogue, sharing more information on what it was like to be with Brand.

"He's [Russell's] a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him”, she said.

"Let's just say I haven't heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me [on] December 31, 2011."

But it seems as though everything worked out for the better.

The comedian later tied the knot with author Laura Gallacher in 2017, and they share two daughters together with a third child on the way.

Perry also moved on to the Lord Of The Rings star, Orlando Bloom, 44, and they later went on to have a baby named Daisy in 2020.

So, maybe it just wasn't meant to be?
